PINEWOOD DERBY 101 - INSPECTION PHOTOS
What To Expect When You Arrive On Race Day

When you check-in for your Pinewood Derby race, the first thing that will happen is an inspection of your car.  Organizers will want to make sure all entries conform to the stated rules for car weight, dimensions and construction standards.

Note:  This page contains several high resolution, large size photographs.  As such this these  pictures may take extra time to download, especially with a dial-up internet connection.

The car will first be visually inspected to insure that it is make with the proper wood kit, wheels and axles.
This is an example of standards for Pinewood Derby cars (always check for the specific rules for your organization's race):
        > Overall length must not exceed 7 inches.
        > Overall width must not exceed 2 and three quarters inches.
        > Overall height must not exceed 3 inches.
        > Total car weight must not exceed 5 ounces (includes everything-wheels, paint, trim, decals and weights)
        > Wheel bearings, bushing, washers and springs can not be used.
        > Cosmetic accessories are okay, as long as the car still conforms to the dimensions and weight above.   Approved accessories include decals, steering wheel, driver and car trim.
        > There must be three eighths of an inch clearance between the bottom of the car and the ground (to allow the lane strip to pass under the car between the wheels.  The lane strip keeps the car traveling in its own lane.)

Pinewood Derby Car Weighed On A Postal Scale - Copyrighted Photo
After the visual inspection, the car will be weighed.  In most cases it can not weigh more than 5.0 ounces (141.75 grams).  Here a postal scale was borrowed from an office mailroom to insure accuracy.

Pinewood Derby Regulation Size Box - Copyrighted Photograph
Finally your car will be checked for proper dimensions.  This is done by placing a "size box" over the car to insure that it doesn't exceed regulation length, height or width.
If your car does not pass inspection, you will be allowed to modify it.  Click here for more information on the tools you should have with you to make last-minute modifications.
After inspection, your car will be taken from you.  It will be set aside in a secure area prior to the race to insure that it is not damaged or modified.
