PINEWOOD
DERBY 101 - TOOLS Pictures Of The Tools To Have With You On Race Day
It's a good idea to bring tools with you on race day.
Inspectors may require to you modify the weight or dimensions of
your car. For that you'll need the right tools for the job.
Last minute modifications are common. Having a bag full of
tools allows you to set up an emergency tool bench anywhere.
Bring screw drivers, pliers, scissors, graphite, glue, a wood
shaping chisel, sandpaper, a hammer, a marker, a cordless drill
and a scale if you have one.
Don't be surprised if others ask to use your tools because they
didn't anticipate making last minute changes.
Graphite wheel lubricant is shown in the bottle on the left.
Note that the "needle nose applicator" is useful in applying
graphite
between axles and wheels just prior to the race. Graphite is
available
at hobby shops that sell Pinewood Derby supplies.
A scale is show on the right. It's useful for reducing
car weight on the fly. On race day you are allowed to decrease
weight
following the official weighing, but not increase it.
A cordless drill is especially useful on race day. This drill is
being used to remove small amounts of lead weight. The lead on
this car was molten when it was poured into holes drilled into the
car's body.
This team even brought a copy of detailed instructions for Pinewood
Derby car construction. Books such as these are for sale on the
internet and in hobby shops.
