PINEWOOD
DERBY 101 - TRACK PHOTOS Photographs Of A Typical Pinewood
Derby Racetrack
Note:
This page contains several high resolution, large size
photographs. As such this these
pictures may take extra time to download, especially with a dial-up
internet connection.
This is a typical Pinewood Derby racetrack, used by everyone who
competes on race day. The car is first pulled by gravity
down a steep hill, then the car coasts over a long flat run to the
finish line (the black line adjacent to the boy in the yellow shirt.)
The track has several lanes so many cars can compete
simultaneously. Chairs
are placed as a barrier to spectators.
This is the view from the top of the racetrack. Note the silver
starting pins in the middle of each lane. These pins hold the car
in place until the start of the race. A lever
pulls down the pins simultaneously to insure a fair start.
This is a view of the finish line. Note how the center lane
strips rise up following after the black finish line. This
feature lifts
the car wheels off the track. The car's belly rubs against the
elevated lane strips. Friction brings the car to a halt.
Typically a
pillow is placed at the far end of the track to cushion the final stop.
This is a view of the underside of the starting hill. Note the
lever used to pull down the starting pins.
